First of all, we require that you are at least 19 years of age, in good health, and have a year of college or full- time employment or military service under your belt.

We honestly expect a genuine caring for and interest in children, as we said. This is utmost, after the minimal age and employment standards above. If you have experience taking care of or teaching children, you'll be a lot closer to the top of our recruitment list.

Experience and Certification
We need specialists in the hundred or so activity areas featured in our program. There are no "general counselors" as such at Wekeela and we expect that each counselor who has cabin responsibilities, and most do, will also have certification or equivalent experience in their specialty areas. For example, music training and performance ability are necessary for any music staff (in addition to the ability to teach).

Likewise, athletics coaches will be expected to have extensive experience in their specialty sport coaching, intercollegiate or semi-professional or higher competitive skills, etc.

Character
You'll have to satisfy our need for staff who are patient, giving, and fair-minded when dealing with children and each other. At our level of camping, there is not much to separate us from competing camps in terms of facilities and equipment we excel because of the relationships we build and nurture at Wekeela.

Every summer, the majority of campers are returning campers. They return for an almost unanimous reason: the people, which means the staff, the other campers, and the relationships that they form here.
