One of the reasons parents send their children to Wekeela - aside
from the friendships and social and emotional growth their children experience
-- is to have them in an environment where there are standards and
where there is supervision-in many cases, a level of
supervision that exceeds what they know they themselves can provide at
home.
We place a very strong emphasis on individual instruction as well as team participation.
In fact, most activities are not coed. For example, our sports activities are
grouped by gender, then by age, and within age groups by ability--as a result,
the level of play is appropriate to that group. Most coed activities occur during
the evening program, which are planned to promote the benefits of group play
and social interaction.
"Gina is walking around with a confident smile that we've never seen before, and
Gussie wept all the way home, full of grief to leave her new summer home." - BW,
NYC
The heritage of Wekeela is to combine the best program
of single sex camps with the social and developmental advantages of
coed camps.
What about the instruction?
The overall program is basically instructional, with a strong emphasis on
individual skill development. There is also plenty of opportunity to test
newly developed
skills through team sports and a broad program of intramural and inter-camp
tournaments.
