Our location
Camp Wekeela is about three hours from Boston, the closest major market, though we're a great deal closer to Portland, Maine, and some other large cities. Hartford, Maine is a half hour from the twin cities of Lewiston-Auburn on the Maine Turnpike pretty much on the border of an fields area that attracts outsiders for two of Maine's major industries - tourism and timber. It's also an ideal place for summer camps - there are a number of them in this part of the state. Incidentally, our postal address is in Canton, Maine.
Our surroundings
Camp Wekeela just grows and grows, much like the children who come here every summer. Currently it is well over 150 acres of woods, playing fields and campus buildings - both cabins and purpose-built centers for separate areas of the program. We've expanded the property with new acquisitions several times and we are usually in the midst of a building program - whether for new playing fields or new cabins or even larger construction projects.
Our resources
The nearest body of water is right at our toe - tips. It's a lake called Little Bear Pond (they call lakes "ponds" up here in Maine), and we own quite a bit of the shoreline. A channel that allows for boat passage connects us to Big Bear Pond, for more ambitious water sports and waterskiing maneuvers. In addition to our white sandy beach and our docks for swimming and boating on the water, on land there are several athletic fields and courts for land sports from tennis to field hockey, from archery to soccer, from basketball to tetherball, from - but you get the idea. There's room for about 280 campers to keep busy at their favorite activities, and about 130 staff counselors to keep them happy and busy.
We are competitive with any camp in any state in the United States. Our facilities are among the finest in the country. And we take our campers on trips to New England and Canada that only add to their excitement.
